Sushma Swaraj was one of the tallest leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party. A seasoned Parliamentarian and a great orator, She was an ardent advocate of nationalism. Sushma Swaraj made her debut into politics at a young age of 25 when she joined the Haryana government in 1977 as the youngest cabinet minister. She was also the first woman chief minister of Delhi. A remarkable leader she was appointed as the Minister of External Affairs of India in the first Narendra Modi government (2014 – 2019). She was the second woman to hold the office, after Indira Gandhi. Swaraj, as External Affairs Minister, brought a sense of assertiveness in India's diplomacy and was known for her prompt response on Twitter to address grievances of overseas Indians.
Sushma Swaraj was born on 14 February 1953 at Ambala Cantt, Haryana. She attended Sanatan Dharma College in Ambala Cantonment and earned a bachelor's degree with majors in Sanskrit and Political Science. She studied law at Panjab University, Chandigarh. In 1973, Swaraj started practice as an advocate in the Supreme Court of India. She was part of a team of lawyers who contested the case of George Fernandes during the Emergency days of the Indira Gandhi regime. She married Swaraj Kaushal, a peer and fellow advocate at the Supreme Court of India on 13 July 1975.
Political Career
Sushma Swaraj had her roots in RSS as her father was a prominent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member. She actively participated in Jayaprakash Narayan's Total Revolution Movement. She began her political career as a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1982. She represented Ambala Cantonment assembly seat and was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the Devi Lal government. After the Emergency, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Later, she became a national leader of the BJP. For a brief period, she also served as the Chief Minister of Delhi.
In her long political career, Sushma Swaraj served in various capacities. She served as Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting & Telecommunication under Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. She was Minister of Health, Family Welfare, and Parliamentary Affairs from January 2003 until May 2004, when the National Democratic Alliance Government lost the general election. A fiery orator she served as Leader of Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha.
When in 2014 Indian general election her party under the leadership of Narendra Modi got a major victory, she was appointed as the External Affair Minister of India. She was the second woman to hold the office, after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Active on social media site Twitter, she earned a reputation of easily-accessible External Affairs Minister. She will be best remembered for resolving minor issues like issuance of visa to the needy and for resolving the Doklam standoff with China in 2017. She had also played a crucial role in staying Kulbhushan Jadhav's case who was sentenced to death by a Pakistan court.
Illness and Death
Sushma Swaraj passed away in Delhi following a cardiac arrest. She was brought to AIIMS and was straight away taken to the emergency ward. She was administered CPR but did not respond.
